Wow!  The trip to the UP was great!  The weather was perfect and our bus driver was congenial.

I had to make some fast alterations in our plans when I got a call on Friday afternoon saying that the Castlewood Inn was ordered in bankruptcy court to close its doors immediately!  After checking the areas near the bridge (not enough rooms at too much price), I asked our hotel in Marquette and they were able to take us for a second night.  Then the bus company said it was no extra charge for the additional miles on the new itinerary.  Whew!

We had a nice walk in Grand Ledge.

Pictured are 4 of the 26 that walked on Friday evening.

On Saturday evening, we did the Marquette YRE.

That's Betty, Roxie, Rob and Bob.

That's Harris and Frances along the Lake Superior shoreline in Marquette.

The event at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point was an adventure.  It began with my marking team coming back to say the shoreline route became impassible before the checkpoint.  Apparently my contact up at Whitefish point had failed to let me know about the massive deadfall from the winter storms!  So, we re-routed and sent people around on Cemetery Road.  Then Mary came back to say that although she did manage to deliver the kids okay to my dad, Cemetary Rd had deep sand pits where her car had gotten stuck.  Fortunately there were folks who pulled her out.  At that point, I knew the walkers were getting some extensive exercise.

I went out to collect the marking ribbons (and look for my dad and kids at the checkpoint nobody got to).  I met up with quite a few folks returning on the very sandy Cemetery Rd.  I was chatting with the lady who had helped Mary earlier, when Jack and Annette caught up with me.  We got to the cemetery and then headed out to the beach to see if we could get past the trees on the beach.

That's Jack, watching Annette make her way over a rather large bit of deadfall on the beach.

So, then we went back to Marquette for the night and headed out early in the morning for St. Ignace.  The bus dropped us at the starting point north of the bridge and away we went.

48 of our 50 walkers did the event with the thousands of other folks.

I'll put my other pictures from the trip on a separate page.

We still need a couple more votes on issues from the minutes of our business meeting last month in Charlotte.  If you are a member and haven't yet, please read the minutes below and email me to let me know your vote and comments.  (I have votes from Mary, Eunice, Nancy, Darrell, me, Jeff, Barbara and Anne.)

See you at 10 am in Frankenmuth on the 16th!

Get your passports ready!

The next trip is in the planning stages!  It looks like we'll be staying for 2 nights in a hotel in or near Niagara Falls, ON.  So, folks will be able to do their choice of the YRE all on the Canadian side, or crossing the Rainbow Bridge to walk on both sides.  We'll do the YRE at Port Dalhousie on Lake Ontario and I've asked the club over there to do an event at Port Colburne on Lake Erie (they'll be having their Canal Days that weekend).

Once I get a hotel and bus prices confirmed, I'll put up a registration sheet.
