On Saturday, April 8th, Nancy, John and I walked and measured the East Lansing YRE.  No adjustments needed there, except that they put a new pedestal on the John Hannah statue, so I have to change the checkpoint question.

More of the club t-shirts are sold, or are being held.  We currently have 6 L, 4 XL and  4 XXL available.  We're going with the price of $15 L & XL / $17 XXL, at least until we get a chance to decide it officially.  We now have book covers!  They will be available at the Birmingham group walk and after.

Our 1st quarter walk numbers are being verified.  Barring any corrections, it looks like we had a total of 24 paid credits with 2 coupon credits, making 26 walks on the 5 YREs that were open January thru March.  That means that the club took in $72, and we'll pay out to AVA $30 in credits and $25 in quarterly processing fees.  That means the club gets to keep $17 toward the sanction fees in August.

Joan sent this email about the construction going on aroung Birmingham . . .
I-696 has been closed weekends the last two weekends between I-275 and Telegraph Rd.

When going west, I've been taking Southfield (M-39) south to I-96 west, which connects to M-14 at I-275, and connects to I-94 and I-96 via I-275.

Another option I've taken is 12-Mile Road and 13-Mile Road, which both parallel I-696, north of I-696.  I prefer 13-Mile Road, because it's less crowded than 12-Mile Road, doesn't go through any downtowns, and it's shorter if you're taking it all the way to Woodward, for simplicity's sake.  [14-Mile Road is not a good choice (part dirt road plus some turns), but 15-Mile Road would also work.]

Taking I-96 and Southfield (M-39) is the fastest alternative -- really just as fast as I-696 -- but 12 and 13 do avoid going through the city of Detroit.

MDOT has a website for construction projects http://www.michigan.gov/mdot and a brochure on this project.  It's hard to tell whether I-696 will be closed the weekend of April 22, but there is a phone number on the brochure, and I think there is a good chance it will be closed that weekend.

Check out the current American Wanderer to see our article.  We hope to get more registrations for the Great Lakes Weekend during Labor Day weekend 2006 from the info provided in the article.

Dot and Joan would like to head to Ohio sometime to do the Xenia and Yellow Springs walks.  It would involve an overnight stay somewhere near Dayton.  My dad and I will be doing the Xenia and Columbus walks on May 3 or 4.  If you would like to meet us down there, we'd be happy to walk with you.  If your schedule isn't open then, talk to Dot and Joan in Birmingham about arranging a time with them.

See you in Birmingham on April 22, if not before then!
